Chemical peels explained: types, downtime and prices in South Africa

Short answer: most salon peels are superficial, with little or no downtime, and cost from about R460 to R1 000 at the clinics listed on Bliss Clinic. Medium-depth peels, such as TCA peels, are clinic treatments that cost more and can leave you peeling for several days. Deep peels are medical procedures done by doctors.

Here's how the types differ, what you can expect day by day, the brands clinics use, and real prices from well-rated clinics in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

Superficial, medium and deep peels

A chemical peel is an acid solution applied to your skin to loosen dead cells so that fresher skin comes through. The strength of the acid and how long it stays on decide how deep it works.

Superficial peels

These use gentler acids, such as lactic, mandelic, glycolic or salicylic acid, to brighten dull skin, smooth texture and help with congestion. They're the ones you'll see most on salon menus. Bosch Beauty in Rondebosch East, for example, lists a 30% Lactic Acid Peel at R520, a 25% Mandelic Acid Peel at R560 and a 30% Salicylic Acid Peel at R580.

Medium peels

These usually use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or stronger blends and work a little deeper, so they can help with pigmentation, sun damage and fine lines. Expect visible peeling. Gingerlily Spa in Plumstead lists a BioRePeel (35% TCA) at R1 700, and HelloWoman Faerie Glen in Pretoria lists a Nimue TCA peel at R890.

Deep peels

Deep peels are medical procedures with real downtime. If a clinic offers one, ask who performs it and what aftercare and follow-up are included.

Brands clinics use: Mesoestetic, Lamelle, Nimue and more

Most clinics build their peel menu around one or two professional brands, and the brand often tells you what the peel is designed for.

  • Mesoestetic is named on 10 listings on Bliss Clinic, including ABC Aesthetics, Body360 Medical Aesthetics and Meraki Aesthetics in Cape Town and La Beauté in Parkview, Johannesburg. Meraki's menu, for example, matches each Mesoestetic peel to a concern: Blemiskin for oily and acne-prone skin, Melanostop Tranex for pigmentation and Azelan for redness.
  • Lamelle, a South African brand, is the most-listed skincare brand on Bliss Clinic (18 listings). Gingerlily Spa offers three Lamelle peels at R995, each aimed at a different concern: ageing, congestion and hydration.
  • Nimue, another South African brand, is used at HelloWoman Faerie Glen, where the menu runs from a Smart Micropeel for sensitive skin (R710) to a TCA peel (R890).

You may also see Resa K peels on clinic menus. La Beauté in Parkview lists SIX peels and Mesoestetic treatments on its Fresha page, but we didn't capture its prices, so check its booking page.

Downtime day by day

Every peel and every skin is different, so your therapist's aftercare sheet is the one to follow. As a general guide:

  • Superficial peels: your skin may look pink and feel tight for a day or so, with light flaking for a few days. Most people go back to work straight away.
  • Medium (TCA) peels: expect redness, then darker, tight skin that peels over several days. Plan around social events.
  • Deep peels: recovery is longer and medically supervised.

Whatever the peel, don't pick or pull at flaking skin. Let it come away on its own.

Post-peel products

After a peel, keep your routine short and gentle: a mild cleanser, a fragrance-free moisturiser and daily broad-spectrum SPF. Barrier-repair creams with ceramides suit this stage well. Leave out retinol, scrubs and acids until your therapist says it's safe to start again. Our post-treatment skincare kit guide goes into more detail.

You can find aftercare products such as Lamelle Serra Restore Cream and Heliocare 360 sunscreen in our shop.

Frequently asked questions

Which chemical peel is best for beginners?

A superficial peel, such as a lactic or mandelic acid peel, is a gentle first step. At listed clinics these cost from about R520 (Bosch Beauty, Fresha menu checked 19 Oct 2026). Your therapist will check your skin first.

How long does a peel take to heal?

Healing time depends on the peel. Follow your clinic's aftercare sheet.

Can I have a peel in summer?

Many clinics offer gentle peels all year, but freshly peeled skin is more sensitive to the sun. Wear broad-spectrum SPF daily and ask your clinic whether a stronger peel is better saved for winter.

How much is a chemical peel?

At clinics listed on Bliss Clinic, peels cost from about R460–R600 for a superficial salon peel to R900–R1 700 for brand-name and TCA peels (Fresha menus, checked 19 Oct 2026).
